Lets be honest, the internet has evened the playing field in the music business. The line between the haves and the have not’s has been blurred with the advent of myspace and other social networks that allow unknown artist to be side by side with major artists, A&R’s and more.
With that said, most of what you hear online is garbage! Hearing true talent is a rarity. So imagine the thought that was running through the mind of G-Unit lyricist Lloyd Banks when he stumbled upon Willie Staxx.
The Buffalo NY native has been a producer on the grind for years now, but it was his track “2 Sides” that gave him his first shot at greatness.
Wordonthestreetsmag.com talked with Willie about how he got into production and placing a track with Lloyd Banks.
Wordonthestreetsmag.com: How did you get into hip-hop?
Willie Staxx: When I was growing up my Mother listened to a lot of Funk like Gap band Parlentment Zapp Whoddni. It was kind of crazy the sound of all music I would soak up like a sponge until I started having melody’s that I use to see in my head and once I got my hands on a M.P.C. . 2000xl to be exact I became one with Hip Hop.
Wordonthestreetsmag.com: It seems like producers are a dime a dozen right now. What made you want to get into making beats?
Willie Staxx: That’s a good question. I would have to say when my little brother B Brief. He started rapping and it made me want to get a M.P and just go hard to help get his movement started. By him being my little brother I didn’t want just anybody making his tracks.
Wordonthestreetsmag.com: What separates you from other beat makers right now.
Willie Staxx: Well I’ve been told a few different times by a few different cats from a few different coasts that my sound is BIG! It’s a combination of what we like to call Aggressive Nock (smash mouth drums) and Melody’s oh yea of course Bass so the difference is it sounds strangely familiar but wildly different.
Wordonthestreetsmag.com: Landing a placement on Lloyd Banks new project was major. How did you get that hook-up?
Willie Staxx: To be very honest I can’t recall were I received the number for G-Unit from. But this is what I did once I got it. I called them over and over and over till I got a email address to send tracks. Oh yea, yes I sent my best tracks first and they picked the 2 sides record for “80s Baby” the very first record out of the 16 I sent them. The rest is history.
Wordonthestreetsmag.com: Who are some of the producers who you look up to and why?
Willie Staxx: It’s two main producers I feel are true masters at this beat-making, record producing thing. They play the game at the highest level and I only hope I can get my production to be able to surpass theirs and that’s the good Doctor, Dr. Dre for his crisp sound and stellar emotion on the keys and the sample wizard Just Blaze. Now he (Just Blaze) is king of Aggressive Nock and that cat can murder a sample like no other.
Wordonthestreetsmag.com: I’ve asked this question of many name producers. What is the difference between a producer and a beat-maker?
Willie Staxx: A beat maker is jus that a beat maker he lays the foundation and has not much to do with the constructing the record witch is sitting there with the artist and or the writers and making a good record. A hit record. That’s the path I’m on.
Wordonthestreetsmag.com: Are there any artists that you’re working with exclusively?
Willie Staxx: Well right now my focus is on Conyak Davinchi. A witty spiting wordsmith. When the world gets a hold to what he is applying to beats and his song making talents.
Wordonthestreetsmag.com: What’s the advantage of having a good team (publicist and managers) behind you?
Willie Staxx: Bottom Line it allows you to focus on what got you all there. The music.
