The road to riches for independent artists has gotten a lot rockier over the years. In order to be seen and taken serious by major labels you have to now act and operate like a major label.
One artist who mastered that theory is Trenton, New Jersey native Big Ooh. Rather than waiting for a major label to pay attentionto his movement, he put his future in his own hand. “Right now I got the mixtape “Ferrari Dreams and Pennitentary Nightmares,” said Big Ooh via phone. “I got got appearances by Sheek Louch, Meek Millz, Gille Da Kid on it.”
Putting together a major label quality project, Ooh has thrust himself into the spotlight becoming one of the hottest new names on the East Coast in the process. Inspired by the likes of Jay-Z and other East Coast heavy weights, Big Ooh (Big-O) looks like New Jersey’s best hope for hip-hop supremacy. Taking a page out of the books of southern artists, he choose to build his own brand rather than wait for a major to co-sign his talent.
“A major label deal would be cool, but they have to come with the right numbers. Everything has to make sense in order for us to make the deal”
After seeing his video “New Sneakers” featuring the “King of Philly” Gillie Da Kid you can see why he’s not waiting for a co-sign. “New Sneakers” is an ode to the hustle life. Complete with a Jay-Z sample (‘I’m in New Sneakers…I can’t let a day go by”) Ooh goes bar for bar with Gillie without giving up any ground. Up next is the release of his mixtape “Ferrari Dream and Penitentiary Nightmares” hosted by Big Mike. With features from major and indie artists, Big Ooh is setting up to become the East Coast blue-print for how to be successful without a major machine behind you.
“Its hard for independent artists right now, but you got to work.”
