OAKLAND, Calif. — BART officials announced Wednesday night that they have reached a $1.5 million settlement for the young daughter of Oscar Grant III, a Hayward man who was killed by a BART police officer at the Fruitvale station in Oakland on Jan. 1, 2009.
Oakland civil rights attorney John Burris, who represents Grant’s daughter, 5-year-old Tatiana Grant, and his mother, Wanda Johnson, wasn’t immediately available to confirm the settlement. BART’s attorney, Dale Allen, said the settlement on behalf of Tatiana Grant was reached after lengthy mediation sessions with U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Joseph Spero in San Francisco.
Allen said a settlement hasn’t been reached with Johnson.(hmmm what is that about) “We’re continuing to try to find common ground with Miss Johnson,”
Oscar Grant, 22, who was unarmed, was shot and killed by former BART Officer Johannes Mehserle after Mehserle and other officers responded to a fight. (shot in the back while face down on the train platform..and cops say it was an accident) This trial has been pushed back to the end of THIS YEAR. Some swift justice.
