The Un-Signed Hype: Wes Fif

Wes Fif is standing on a chair from Orlando yelling to the industry, “I’m working down here” An underground legend in his city, Wes has shared the mics with the likes of B.o.B. But minus a short stint with Slip-N-Slide, Wes has yet to make his impact on the mainstream world. But that may change in the near future.

His current single “Goin In” has the clubs on rock in the “O” while his mixtapes prepares the scene for what looks like an invasion from the Gun Shot State that’s not from Miami.

Wes Fif and Mehka chopped it up about how he got into hip-hop, why people confuse him with Drake and Lil Wayne, and when we’re going to see him get a deal.

Wordonthestreetsmag.com: How did Wes Fif get into hip-hop?

Wes Fif: I was always inspired by hip-hop. My father used to listen to Too Short and Scarface. When I was around 11 or 12 I found out that they sold singles with instrumentals. I bought the Brat’s first single and it had an instrumental. And that’s what I used to write my first rap. By the time I got out of high school, I already had my mind made up and what I was going to do.

Wordonthestreetsmag.com: What are you working on right now?

Wes Fif: Right now I got two mixtapes out. “Just Watch Me” with Dj Spinnatic out of Tampa and another one with “The Fif Commandment” with Evil Empire and Dj young Legend. We’re also going to drop a 5 song EP in 2010. We just trying to stay busy.

Wes Fif: The single “Goin In” is doing real stupid right now.

Wordonthestreetsmag.com: Has it has gotten confused with Drake’s “I’m Goin In“ ?

Wes Fif: A lot of people tried to confuse it with the Wayne and Drake song theirs is called “I’m Goin In” And we had out record way back in February. We just been sitting on it for a while because we wanted to see how our last record was going to do. After a while, we was like this record is getting such good feedback we should just go head and run it. At this point we got the record to over 150 Dj’s and so far I’ve only heard of one Dj who didn’t like it.

Wordonthestreetsmag.com: Despite rhyming alongside many artists who have major deals you still don’t have one. When do you think we’ll see you on a major?

Wes Fif: I really can’t call it. I don’t believe in that “you’re time will come, everyone has their time” because I know for a fact there are a lot of talented people who aint never going to get their “time”

I’ve been in the game since 2003 and be involved with songs like B.o.B’s “Haterz” and to have the little deal that I had, I’ve learned something. “Its who you know” It’s real. You can be the most talented dude in the world, you might have the most money, but if you don’t who to spend it with then or you don’t know somebody that can get their talent to who they know and make the shit happen then its for not. It’s not so much the timing, it’s going to take just the right people to come in and believe in my situation and feel like we all going to get paid right now. I feel like I’ve been in touch with a few people who could make that happen, but for now just going to work until it happen.

Wordonthestreetsmag.com: 2010 is around the corner. What are we going to see from Wes Fif next year?

Wes Fif: More of the same. Just continue to work. We got the EP coming. I’m going to get and try to touch markets that I’ve never touched before like the West Coast, Deep South, East Coast. Right now is the branding of Wes Fif. A lot of people know my name but don’t know my face so the main thing is to become a household name.
